Cardboard strength.
A starting point for understanding the strength of a box is understanding cardboard strength for packaging.
Cartons are generally thought of as coming in two types, ie single wall or double wall.
When considering cardboard in this way “walls” or “layers” there are predominantly 4 types with the single and double being the main type used for cardboard boxes.
The main types of “wall” in cardboard are:
Single Face, Single wall, Double wall, Triple wall.
Cardboard is made of paper sheets attached to each other to provide added strength.
The sheets that make up cardboard are:
- The liner (consider this as a flat sheet of paper).
- The medium (consider this as the wavey or corrugated part of the cardboard that is generally seen in the middle between two flat sheets).

Typical corrugated cardboard construction types
Single face is a liner attached to a sheet of corrugated medium. (Flat on one side wavy on the other). Boxes are not made of this, but it excellent for wrapping product.
Single wall is one sheet of medium attached between two sheets of liner. (Flat on both sides and wavy in the middle)
Double wall is probably most easily thought of as single wall with a single face attached to it. So you when you look at it “side on” you see: a flat liner, a corrugated medium, a flat liner, a corrugated medium, a flat liner. (3 flat sheets and 2 corrugated sheets between the flat sheets)
Triple wall is double wall with another layer of single face added on the outside. (4 flat sheets and 3 corrugated sheets between the flat sheets)

Choosing how strength is achieved for the carton you need
When looking for added strength in a cardboard carton people often ask for double or triple wall board, but another and often better option is to simply get a higher weight of paper used as the liner sheets in the single wall board. This can be lower cost for the box and takes up less space to transport and store.

When you’re asking for a strong cardboard box it is often a good idea to say what you are needing to have the box achieve rather than going straight to a double wall option. (“I need my box on the bottom of the stack to be able to support another 5 boxes stacked on top of it on a pallet with 20kgs in each box”).
